Have you ever tried to build your blog authority by commenting on other blogs? Does helping others help you? Find out below!

Today I am going to tell you a very simple trick to grow your blog.

Yes, it’s commenting on other blogs. It can help you get the word out about your blog.

In this post I will tell you how commenting on blogs is beneficial to you and what are the best practices of getting your blog comments approved.

So, save this post for later.

If you have not started your blog yet get yourself a blog by following my 3 step guide.

Below is a definition of a blog comment if you already know what a blog comment is you can scroll down to the next section.

What is a blog comment?

I believe you know what a comment is, I mean we all use social media and the best way to connect with people is to comment on their posts.

A blog comment is no different.

“A comment is an afterthought received in a blog article by a person who has read the article.”

It’s as easy as you read an article online and you liked the information that you also want to tell the writer (or ask a question) and you commented on the post.

How are blog comments helpful to grow your blog?

But there is not one benefit only. This little practice will give you 3 big benefits.

Here are they listed.

1- Off Page SEO

This is the best of all! Because you get backlinks.

Here’s how.

When you leave a valuable comment on a blog article that you read and the comment gets approved by the website owner you also leave your website’s home page link on that post. And that’s how you get a backlink.

Check out the image below.

You will see the 4 options. There is also a website option and that’s where you put the link to your homepage.

(The comments are approved by the owner because a site receives good as well as spam comments therefore the owner has an option to show only those comments that he approves.)

Please note that these links are by default nofollow links (meaning Google will not follow them while crawling) but they are still very useful.

As these links help in increasing your Domain Authority score.

Domain Authority (DA) is the score of your site’s overall performance out of 100.

The greater the number the easier it is to rank on Google.

The DA was first calculated by Moz. Check out your DA from here.

Are These links helpful?

Generally, nofollow links are not considered much helpful. Everybody wants dofollow links (followed by Google while crawling).

But a nofollow link from a quality source (a site with a high DA score) is much better than a dofollow link from a bad source (a site with a low DA score).

Therefore your focus should be to receive links from quality sources whether it is a dofollow link or a nofollow link.

I received a link from a website with a high DA score only by getting my comment approved.

2- Building Relationships With Other Bloggers

If you are a beginner blogger you might know how important it is to have friends in the same boat to discuss problems with.

Also, if you are blogging for a while you would know how great it is to have friends to discuss problems with.

All in all, we need friends.

Building Relationships is very crucial in blogging.

Leaving a thoughtful comment on a blogger’s site is another way to do that.

Infact it’s the better one. How?

When you comment you not only approach for a friendship but also build backlinks.

However, if you want to get friends with a blogger you must connect with him personally. This thing should reflect in your comment.

Don’t expect that “nice post” or “great tips” will help. It is hardly that such comments get approved.

Tip – To build a personal relationship, comments with personal stories work.

Guest Blogging Opportunities

Oftentimes the best friendships unlock guest blogging opportunities.

3- Diverting Readers To Your Blog

When you offer a suggestion in a comment and put a link to the post most of the blog readers will want to check out your blog post to learn what you told them in your comment.

This is a great way to get a backlink with readers coming to your blog post.

Imagine each time a visitor reads your comment and clicks on the link he also visits your blog.

Similarly 10 comments on different sites will give you a lot of visitors from 10 different sites.

But remember a thoughtful comment that makes sense gets approval.

It truly is the game of numbers and quality.

Okay so now you know why blog comments should be an important part of your strategy. Let’s get you a strong strategy.

Best Practices To Get Blog Comments Approved

This, in no doubt, is the easiest way to grow blog traffic but a little mistake can also hurt your blog.

Please remember that nobody can trick Google. So the only thing left to do is to be on good terms with Google.

Otherwise your site can get penalized and Google can diminish your reach.

Therefore it’s important that you follow the best practices to not look like spam.

1- Gravatar Email

Getting a Gravatar email is the first thing you want to do. This will make your site and profile picture publicly available without you having to upload an image every time.

Isn’t that great! You can comment on any blog post with your email and your profile picture will appear automatically.

Plus it’s free!

If a person doesn’t get a Gravatar email his profile is displayed blank.

This is another way to introduce yourself.

Get your own Gravatar from here.

2- Quality Over Quantity

A thoughtful and relevant comment is much better than 10 irrelevant comments.

There are 2 reasons why you shouldn’t focus on quantity.

  • If you post 30 comments in a day, Google will notice this and mark it as your spammy behavior.

And Google will penalize you.

  • You can’t read 30 blog posts in a day and if you don’t read a post you can’t write a thoughtful comment or give any suggestions.

That way you end up writing a “nice post” and the writer will understand that this is your trick and will never approve your comment.

Therefore you must not follow these quantity terms.

3- A Strong Strategy

Follow this strategy to get your blog comments approved by big sites.

STEP 1 – Find out all those sites you want to comment on. Make sure these are niche-specific.

Another thing is these sites mustn’t appear shady. Meaning you must get a backlink from genuine sites.

A shady link can harm your image.

STEP 2 – Read their blog post(s).

STEP 3 – Write a thoughtful comment. Some of the ways to write great comments.

  • Make a suggestion.
  • Point out a specific thing and start a discussion on it.
  • Share a personal story.
  • Reply to another comment.

And there are many more ways to start an engagement. All you need to make sure is that there are still better comments than “nice post!” or “Great tips!”.

STEP 4 – Fill in the other details and click submit.

STEP 5 – This is optional as some sites allow this and some don’t.

There’s a checkmark saying that you want to receive further notifications. This is a great way to forward the conversation. Make sure you check the option.

4- A Good Number

How many comments you should post depends on your strategy. But 30 and more in a day is definitely not good.

Therefore start with a small number. Maybe 10 comments in a week and write great comments.

I personally focus on 10 in a week but this number fluctuates regularly.

There you have it.

The easiest way to grow your blog. Commenting on others’ posts unlocks great opportunities.

I have a few backlinks from big sites. And I have used the same strategy for getting them.

You can too.

What you should do? Plan a master strategy of commenting on blogs and divert readers to your blog.

Thanks for a great post.

  10. Great article, Ekta!

A blog comment can definitely help grow your blog as well as build backlinks in the process but it may take a while for these backlinks to build a network.

  11. Great article. Commenting on other blogs is an often overlooked SEO tactic. It really helps to expose your brand, and yes, while the links are nofollow, they are links, and they can send traffic to your site, ultimately becoming a signal to Google and other search engines. I really like the section about building relationships. That’s really the biggest key to growing your blog. It’s so hard to do it alone, but if you build genuine relationships with other bloggers, you can really grow your traffic, your readership and even your revenue. Thanks for this one!

    1. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I was exactly the same. I used to write small comments but later when I realised long detailed comments are helpful for both the blogger and myself I started writing then after giving a thought.

  13. Great advice. Commenting on other blogs can be very valuable for sure. You make a solid point about not over-commenting. Like you said, no one spends their entire day reading blogs, so 30 comments in a day is a red flag. You need to genuinely read the article, appreciate the content and then make an educated comment that adds value.

    1. Thanks for reading this article. Right reading one or two blog posts a day and putting genuine comments is what we should do as bloggers if we want to use this trick to grow our blogs.
